Fall Social: Fireside Chat on Career Mobility

With the ever-transforming industry landscape and increasing competition in Calgary, actively managing your career is a must have skill. To discuss this, AFP Calgary will be hosting a fireside chat with Karen Graham, Treasurer of Cenovus Energy, on Thursday, October 12th, 2023 at Untitled Champagne Lounge in downtown Calgary. Karen will share her industry career mobility story, her experience with the Cenovus Energy – Husky Energy merger, and also strategies for creating your own career path.

As Treasurer, Karen is a senior member of the finance leadership team of one of Canada’s largest publicly traded integrated energy companies with assets in excess of $55 billion and with operations in Canada, the United States, and Asia Pacific. She and her team are responsible for safeguarding Cenovus’s financial assets and ensuring Cenovus has strong liquidity and a cost-efficient capital structure adaptable to changing commodity price environments to be prepared for strategic opportunities while delivering on day-to-day operations, funding capital plans, and shareholder returns.

Karen has extensive financing experience, large M&A transaction and integration experience, and is a member of the Cenovus’s Canadian and U.S. Management Pension Committees, a director on Cenovus’s European financing entities, and sits on Cenovus’s Talent Development Advisory Committee and Indigenous Inclusion Advisory Committee.

Before joining the oil and gas industry at Husky Energy in 2012 in Treasury, Karen spent eight years as a full-time parent to two boys and a community volunteer. Prior to that she had a career with HSBC in Commercial Banking and Private Client Services at their brokerage arm, where Karen progressed to Vice President and Assistant National Manager of Private Client Services in Toronto, Ontario.

Karen holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary and has recently completed the ICD-Rotman Directors Education Program. She currently sits on the CPA Alberta’s Board of Directors as a Public Member.

The fireside chat will be moderated by Lukas Chiodo, Treasury Analyst, who has been in treasury at TC Energy for two and a half years. He graduated from the Haskayne School of Business in 2020 with a major in finance. In his free time, he enjoys partaking in a wide range of different sports including hockey golf and football.
